January’s Heritage Quilt Collection
I confess, writing this blog post is mostly for my own benefit and satisfaction. A collective montage memorial of sorts, to more permanently honor, all together, these incredible pieces made by so many hands across the decades.
Admittedly, the time I take to document these collections is enormous. I haven’t been a responsible small business owner and calculated the time as a whole, but with the four-step photo process I confessed to having on Instagram yesterday (shooting the quilts on a bed, then on me, then hung on a wall, then extensive detailed shots of their flaws if any…) it is no wonder I can only manage one collection a month!
The Future Is Vintage
We feel that society has turned a corner. Old and worn is being embraced as beautiful, of value, and significant. The history of a well-made garment that is worn-well is preferred over a garment of questionable quality made by questionable means.
That is all of course a huge part of our ethos here at Folkling.
The future is vintage.
Folkling Home | November
Fall is here and, like many of you, I am in nesting mode. The colder months always cause me to draw inward. As much as I love and prefer to be outside, I can’t resist my human nature to gravitate towards that which evokes feelings of warmth and familiarity as soon as the temperature starts dropping. For me, September always brings with it a creative rush of energy and inspiration, but as autumn settles in and winter approaches, I find myself craving routines and spending more time in reflection and attempting to slow down before the end of the year so as to fully enjoy it.
Folkling Field Trip | Ironside Cabin
Nestled in the woods on seventeen acres in Tennessee is a tiny cabin on a river.
This cabin was the dream of Caitlin and Jason of Ironside Studio. Built with wood from the land, the cabin is nothing short of a dreamy getaway.
Caitlin, dressed in vintage overalls and an Edwardian top, greeted us upon our arrival and showed us around the property. We hadn’t seen any photos of the place, and while our expectations were already high from Caitlins description of it over the phone, they were far exceeded seeing everything in person.
Folkling Field Trip | Memery Farm
— Folkling Field Trip is a series of storied places brought to you by our adventures out on The Road —
One of the things we have loved most about having the Folkling brick and mortar in Gordonsville is the community we’ve discovered since being here.
From the locals-turned-regulars that come say hi every weekend, to the fellow shop owners who are always supporting and cheering us on in one form or another. It’s a small town so you can’t walk to the post office without seeing someone you know, but that’s one of our favorite things about it.
The Long Road Home
Some of you have been here since the beginning of this story.
Some of you may just be immersing yourselves in it for the first time.
Whichever it is we hope you enjoy watching the unfolding.
The unfolding of two people and a story based in finding possibility and beauty in that which is often overlooked.
It felt fitting to hit The Road to document these coats, for that is where we found most of them, albeit in a different form.
Driving down favorite and familiar routes, pausing at seemingly broken places and finding beauty in them. So it was with the textiles that were transformed into these garments.
A mirrored practice.
Finding importance and meaning in layers and histories, however unraveled and unknown to us.
For The Slow Home
A special collection of antique homewares has now been added to the web shop!
I think finding artistry and beauty in seemingly everyday, mundane, practical things is one of my favorite ways to bring meaning into, and find appreciation in, my home.
This little collection of goods is inspired by that daily practice in my own life and my hope is to spark some of this thought process for others as well.
