Late 18th Century Indigo & Ochre Whole Cloth Quilt
Truly one of the most remarkable, and earliest quilts we have had the pleasure of having in the shop. From a prominent Pennsylvania collector. This whole cloth quilt is made of three wool panels on the front, dyed a deep indigo, with a wool multi paneled back that is a rich golden ochre color. Scalloped, diamond, and straight line hand quilting throughout in a satisfying grid format.
Wool batting and knife binding also add to the special details of this rare textile.
Cross stitched initials "W E / C" on one part of the ochre side of the quilt. Also an unusually large size, rare for this time period.
Seemingly previously cut down and mended in the middle at some point during in its lifetime.
Likely late 18th, though possibly early 19th century.
A truly rare and spectacular textile that will be the crown jewel of any collection.

In really exceptional and beautiful condition for its age. One corner with a charming older mend, original to the quilt. Overall very sturdy and in great usable condition. Very little wear to the binding save for one 1/2” spot. Several small though minor pin holes throughout exposing the batting throughout the quilt. A 2’ linear water stain down the front of the blue side. Discoloration spots and water stains across the gold side of the quilt.
Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.
⋒ This is an antique piece, all photos have been taken in natural light and with limited editing to reflect its condition. Please keep in mind all antique pieces have little imperfections and reflect the story and charm of the piece.
