1910 Pine Burr / California Star Quilt

This 1910 quilt is so amazingly graphic. It’s a variation of a feathered star pattern. The reference books that show hundreds of different quilt patterns and their names did not have this specific pattern. It is therefore thought that this quilt is an original design, a combination of the Pine Burr pattern and the California Star pattern. Both of those patterns are variations of the Feathered Star motif.

Feathered Star quilts were very popular during colonial days and are still a favorite among collectors. When a quilt is carefully planned and artistically pieced, it will have a lot of visual impact. White background with a goldenrod center, surrounded by four blue triangles that form the arms of the star. Each blue triangle is completely surrounded by red triangles that form a sawtooth border around the star, thus the ‘feathered’ star look. The stars are connected to each other by means of 4 red diamond shaped pieces, forming a pinwheel at the junction of each 4 stars. From the pinwheels, a white diamond shaped triangle is formed, and this becomes the background for the stars. There is a 2 inch blue border on all four sides, and the quilt is bound with the same red fabric used to make the sawtooth and pinwheel triangles.

Hand and machine pieced. VERY unusually, machine quilted as a whole in an original design of swirls.
A nice lighter weight quilt for the transition in seasons.

82” x 72”

C O N D I T I O N
Some fading on a few of the blue pieces, binding is frayed in two places, 1/4” x 1/4” hole in one corner.

Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project my friends. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.
