1869 Bear's Paw Country Quilt

$724.00
sold out

This 1869 quilt is in an original version of the Bear’s Paw pattern. An early American colonial antique quilt that is a folk art masterpiece.
In the ever popular red and white color combination, the quilting is visible from a distance, which creates texture and depth and a sense of movement when paired with the saw-tooth edges of the red “bear claws”. Double red and white borders. Great Civil War era textile.

Collector’s to museum quality because of graphic, visual effect and rarity.

From the Guter Family estate in Kansas City. Quilt is thought to have been made during or immediately after the family moved from New York to Kansas City in 1869.
The previous owners had it appraised in 1988 for $925 then in 1998 at $1400.

D E T A I L S

Hand pieced and hand quilted at 10-12 stitches per inch. Does have a hole and a few original mends (which I always love seeing in a quilt personally. A testament to its use and story over time)
A nice heavier weight quilt for keeping you extra cozy. Has early cotton batting.
Unusual to find a heavier, “using” quality quilt because they were “used up”, using quilts of this age are not usually this graphic. One minor tear - can be easily mended if owner wishes. Durable border, collector’s quality.

Measurements laid flat:

69.5” x 87”

Shown here on a standard Full size bed.

C O N D I T I O N

In very gorgeous useable condition. Has some spots and discoloring throughout, mostly from storage, that may come out with further spot treatment (ie: some good ol Palmolive and some sunshine!)

Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project my friends. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.

⋒  This is an antique piece, all photos have been taken in natural light and with limited editing to reflect its condition. Please keep in mind all antique pieces have little imperfections and reflect the story and charm of the piece.

⋒ This find will ship to you within one week of purchasing. International and combined shipping is available, please contact me via instagram DM at @Folkling for a personalized shipping quote.

I want you to love your vintage finds, so please look through the photos and read the  listing description carefully and feel free to ask any and all questions before purchasing, as I do not accept returns.

Thank you for understanding!
