1860s Sunburst New York Beauty Quilt
This sunburst design actually predates the "New York Beauty" pattern. This Civil War period quilt could be considered a red, white and green quilt as the brown colored fabric may have started out as warm brick red. Some of the reddish hue seems to have migrated into the white fabric after previous washing, making the white appear slightly pink in some light. The green also shows signs of color loss from fading or washing. In some places the green has gone blue. We found it this way, and did not wash it ourselves, so this observation is just our theory on what may have happened. Fully symmetrical except for the pieced border, which only appears on two sides, there are nine complete blocks and 13 sections of sashing.
Most unusual of all, each block has an appliqué sunburst in the center. Appliqué elements are uncommon in this traditional pieced quilt design. The quilt includes more than 2,000 pieces and more than 95,000 hand quilting stitches. Some of the quilting, such as the triple-line quilting in the pointed arcs, is dense, while other quilting such as the meandering vines in the background, is medium to sparse.
Despite its condition issues, it is a rare masterpiece quilt made in the earliest period of complex pieced patchwork quilts in America.
The quilt was exhibited across the United States and in France, and has a sleeve on the back for hanging. It was published in the book "New York Beauty, Quilts from the Volckening Collection”.

This quilt is in fair condition with fading, color migration, stains, darning repairs and wear to the binding. It is all cotton, very thin and lightweight, and has visible chaff in the thin cotton batting when held up to the light.
Despite its condition issues, it is a rare masterpiece quilt made in the earliest period of complex pieced patchwork quilts in America.
Most importantly: Please do not cut this quilt for a coat or other project. It is too beautiful and in gorgeous condition and a work of art in and of itself. It would be tragic to cut up such a beautiful piece of textile history.
